We all know that we need to start eating a lot healthier, but we don’t always achieve this goal.
The point to eating healthy is not about eating foods that make you cringe, or even lose your appetite altogether. Eating healthier is about loving to eat the foods that make you feel better about yourself, and gives you that energy to get through not only the day but the rest of your life.
It’s no one’s fault really. There are some so-called experts out there, one tells you that certain foods are good for you, while other experts are saying it’s not healthy. You also have the vast amount of nutritional information that is out there that makes anyone’s head spin with what is right or wrong.
Its has been proven and shown that eating the typical “Western Diet” can lead to unwelcome side effects such as higher levels of stress, increased depression, and anxiety.
So let’s dive into 3 ways you can immediately take back control of your diet and your health, not just for the short-term, but the long-term as well.
1. Cut Down On The Sugar
It’s unfortunate that the food industry has decided to put excess amounts of unnecessary sugar in nearly everything that we eat. Next time take a look at the nutritional information panel on the next bag of chips, pop drink, or even energy bar, there is ofter times, 20, and even 30 grams and higher of sugar added.
Each 4 grams is one tablespoon of sugar, just image that for a second. So when you are adding, even more, sugar to your morning coffee, you start to see how you don’t need to add all of this sugar to your body.
The body reacts the same way when it’s on a sugar high than when it’s on drugs.
So be careful the next time you add a teaspoon of sugar to your drink, because for the most part, there is already too much in there to begin with.
2. Increase The Amount Of Fiber
Foods high in fiber is actually good for you, plain and simple. Fiber is proven to reduce heart issues and keeps you regular. What more can you ask for?
Some great places and sources to find high fiber foods are oatmeal, whole grains, nuts, carrots, and tomatoes to name a few.
You can also use things like Metamucil to add to a glass of water and have 1 to 2 glasses a day to help you stay feeling clean from inside.
A pro tip is to drink a glass of Metamucil before a meal. What that does is fill you up faster, so you don’t eat as much, therefore keeping your calorie intake low. A great tip for those looking into weight loss.
3. Put The Salt Shaker Down
Salt, the cousin of Sugar that we spoke of above, is no different to its hazards to our health.
Right off the bat, salt makes you dehydrated, and not being hydrated is bad news for your body. You want to ensure that you are at least getting your adequate fill of liquids a day, but not because salt is the cause of your drinking.
Salt also has a laundry list of harmful side effects on the body, such as: raising your blood pressure, increased risk of heart disease, and possibility of increasing your chance of getting a stroke.
Not so nice things. So when you are out next time, put down the salt shaker, the restaurant probably puts more than an ample amount of salt in your meal already, no need to add more.
As you can see, changing your diet comes down to the little things. Once you know what to look for, change your habits slowly to help you cope with salt or sugar withdrawal.
Once you start to put a plan in place and take action on that meal plan, you will find yourself enjoying the food you eat, rather than wondering what ill effects it is doing to your body.
